Poipu to Portland

Time to go. Too bad.
As we headed out of our place we saw a flock (a gaggle?) of Nene’s. A nice little bonus. We had a last breakfast at the Kalaheo Cafe. Then a quick drive to Waimea to check out the pier we saw from the boat last night. But it was no big thang.
So off to the airport. I took the road to Kapaki Beach to show Marion and discovered the road to the Menehune Fish Pond. This was something we’d read about in a Kauai history book we bought. It was built around 1,000 years ago and was used to provide food to the people. Quite the engineering marvel apparently for ancient islanders. Legend says it was built by the Menehune, leprechaun-like people, in one moonlit night. Who’s to say?
On our way back to the airport we got behind a guy on a moped who was carrying his little dog in a basket on the back. He (the dog) seemed to be enjoying himself immensely. It occurred to me there was a business opportunity in making little dog helmets.
We discovered the Lihue airport is where the world’s slowest TSA agents work. In their defense, it is pretty warm and you don’t want to move too fast. But whoa. When there is a long line of hot people what you really want to do is be very slow. Not. The bags checked in at just under 50 lbs thank goodness. Since we’re already paying 25 bucks each to check them I didn’t want to spend another $50 for them being overweight.
The flights were uneventful, which is the way you want flights to be. But as a last little nod from the gods, as we flew into Portland at 10:30p or so on the 4th of July, you could see fireworks going off all over the place. They were everywhere and we decided it was Portland welcoming us home (allow us our little fantasies, thank you).
A wonderful trip and we already are thinking about when to go back.
