Hours of phone conversation have resulted in a list of necessary supplies which now fill the spare bedroom. I now own a tent, a camp stove, a lantern (and I know what a lamp mantle is), a large water container, and all kinds of stuff. Daniel has stress-tested the tent by sleeping in it for a week. It’s been set up in the spare bedroom. Not exactly a field test but it will have to do.
The good people at Hertz have supplied a nice looking white with black trim Ford Explorer (with Colorado plates) for the trip. It’s dangerously close in style to O.J. Simpson’s white bronco but other than that, it looks pretty cool. It sits about 6 feet higher off the ground than my Celica. A different view of the world for sure.
Les came over and we field tested the camp stove and the lantern. We cooked ourselves a couple of hot dogs on the back porch. Everything seemed to work okay and the dogs weren’t bad.
Packing consisted of throwing everything into the truck. I figure we’ll have to repack at Les’ house anyway. One extra piece of gear that Lewis and Clark didn’t have is a laptop PC. We’ll use this to keep a daily journal of the trip. This being the field test, it looks like it works okay. I wonder how long the batteries last?
