Much like many people in the 1960’s, I’m not at all clear how we ended up in Southeast Asia. It just kind of happened and at some point we were ordered to report. It wasn’t on either of our bucket lists. I know that at one point we had seen a tour of Vietnam and had considered it but decided that it was probably too exotic for us and plus we thought Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi would be crowded and too ‘intense’ for us. We decided to do the Europe river tour instead at that time. But I guess the idea took root. Then we got to chatting with some friends of Marion’s at her high school reunion who told us about the Road Scholar tour group and how great their experience had been (they went to Cuba). So when my latest sabbatical rolled around we checked out their site and lo and behold a walking and barge tour of Cambodia and Vietnam was the first thing that popped up. We wanted to do something fairly exotic before we got ‘too old’, we had really enjoyed the Europe river trip and had heard good things about Road Scholar so we threw caution to the wind and signed up.
This was about a year before we left so we pretty much forgot about it, or at least didn’t really think about it. Then as it finally got closer and we were forced to prepare, the reality started to sink in. Why are we going to Cambodia? But it was too late. It was already paid for so we’re going 😊. (And as it turned out, it was really amazing.)
