We had arranged for the hotel shuttle to take us to the airport a few hours ahead of our scheduled flight. Given the number of cruise ships in town we wanted to be sure to have plenty of time. We needn’t have worried. The plane was delayed. But there was no reason to sit around the hotel and then race to the airport. We might as well sit around the airport and relax.
But first, downstairs for breakfast (at least for me). And nothing like a week of eating ‘egg soup’ scrambled eggs to make one appreciate the very firm little mini scrambled egg ‘pancakes’ available at the free Best Western breakfast.
We got to the airport in plenty of time. And we had no bags to check since they already were somewhere in the system (hopefully). So there was nothing to do but settle in and wait. A theme for the day as it turned out.
We ended up being a couple of hours late leaving Miami, but thanks to Marion’s foresight, it was not a problem. We had eschewed the 2-hour layover in Phoenix for the 6-hour layover. I thought it was a bit crazy at the time (as did the American Airlines app which displayed a warning), but ‘happy wife, happy life’ as the saying goes and she was right.
The gate attendant in Miami was giving all the passengers various pieces of advice about how to quickly make their connections in Phoenix (check your carry on, don’t stop at the bathroom, etc.), none of which anyone seemed to do when we got there. But we didn’t have to worry. We sauntered into Phoenix airport, found a nice restaurant and had a nice lunch. And still had a few hours to relax.
Thankfully the Portland flight was on time. Our bags made it. We were able to remember where we parked the car. And 16 hours or so later, we made it home. But relatively stress free!
We got home just in time for Super Bowl Sunday and got to watch the Eagles demolish Kansas City. Which I greatly enjoyed. It took about 4 days to get my sleep patterns right again. And I managed to catch the flu (or something) somewhere along the way. I got sick right before and right after the trip, but not while traveling. That’s a win!
And now it’s time to post-process the 1600 pictures or so and publish them and this log. And it was sure nice not having to go back to work…
